5 Tips to help you prepare for a new horse

5 Tips to help you prepare for a new horse

Congratulations on your new purchase! But before you bring your new pet home, there’s plenty to consider. Here are five steps you should take as you welcome your horse, courtesy of Merial:

1

Complete any necessary ownership transfers for breed organizations.

2

Request Documentation from the previous owner about the horse's health history and vaccination record. Verify with your veterinarian that vaccinations are up to date.

3

Ask the horse's current barn manager or owner about the horse's feed. Try to find a comparable feed to make the transition as easy as possible. Also, make sure you have plenty of hay, tack, and grooming supplies.

4

Clear pastures and barns of any clutter or items that could injure your horse.

5

Separate new horses from your current horses to help gradually introduce the nehorse and to protect current horses from contracting diseases. By taking these steps, you’ll ensure that your horse will come to love its new home. And a happy horse is more likely to be a healthy horse. Don’t hesitate to contact your veterinarian with any additional questions.
